Abstract

In microbial fuel cells whole cells containing enzymes are used for oxidation of a substrate at anode and the oxidizing agent being reduced at cathode to gain electricity from inexpensive organics such as glucose and methanol or renewable resources. This review describes basic chemical, biological and construction characteristics of microbial fuel cells and briefly gives their outlook and future prospects.
