Model Biological Membranes: Their Characterization and Utilization
Keywords:
cytoplasmic membrane, model membrane, cholesterol, electrochemical impedance spectroscopyAbstract
Biological membranes are an essential part of living systems. They make an interphase between the outer and inner medium of the cell. Depending on their structure they often perform very complex functions. The structure of the biological membrane is very complex and often not yet precisely defined and explained. Model lipid membranes are used to obtain more detailed information on their properties and associated processes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy proved to be a useful tool for elucidation of the behavior of model lipid membranes (such as planar and supported lipid bilayers, tethered lipid membranes, liposomes).
