Preparation of composite films based on chitosan – cellulose mixtures, with or without added AgNO3, was studied. The influence of addition of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on the material properties and formation of Ag nanoparticles also investigated. Wettability, water absorption and surface morphology of the films were evaluated. UV-Vis absorption spectra were measured for AgNO3-containing composites after dissolution in acetate buffer. Absorbance maxima at 400 nm confirmed the presence of Ag nanoparticles. Addition of PEG to the polymer mixtures decreased water absorption, increased wettability and considerably changed the surface morphology of the films. PEG addition also leads to increased concentrations of Ag nanoparticles in the polymers after their dissolution. The nanoparticle size is influenced as well. It is apparent that PEG can noticeably alter material properties of chitosan – cellulose composites.
