Abstract

In chemical industry, 1,4-butanediol represents one of many important intermediates. It is used as a starting material for the manufacture of various solvents and plastics, namely tetrahydrofuran, γ-butyrolactone and/or polybutyleneterephthalates. Nowadays, there are several technologies of 1,4-butanediol. Major differences lie in the starting material used, process selectivity and economy. This paper is focused on mass production and the use of 1,4‑butanediol. It is intended to serve as a review of various technologies of 1,4-butanediol.
