We reviewed the basic principles of Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). Although only two installation sites do exist in the Czech Republic now (12T and 15T), new spread of the FT-ICR technology is expected due to important applications both in physical and biological chemistries. However, the substantial primary investment and high operational costs prevent massive installations. The current helium crisis has been reflected by a high liquid helium price, which doubled within the past calendar year. As the world helium sources are expected to be exhausted by 2040, in response, the current world-leading vendor develops modern magnet technologies with negligible cryogen consumption.
