The interaction between manganese and microorganisms is a very complex phenomenon which results in changes of manganese (geo)chemical, as well as biological properties. Direct or indirect biological transformation is a physiologically important process, which plays a significant role in the energetic metabolism of some microorganisms as well as in their protection against environmental risk factors. Thus, this work highlights, besides the chemical aspects, also the environmental consequences of the mutual interaction of manganese and microorganisms. This includes the impact of changes in manganese speciation during redox biotransformation on the distribution of its dominant form in the environment, as well as impact on the availability and mobility of other elements.
